SELF-REFERRALS
Every Fullerton College student
is welcome to use Skills Center materials for personal
skill development in one or more of our many areas
of study. Just check at the counter to obtain a “Materials
Check-out Card.”
Students can drop in as often as they like and stay
as long as they like. Either ask an instructor to
suggest materials to work from or work with Skills
Center staff to create an appropriate individual
lab assignment sheet. Staff will gladly assist with
equipment and material choices.
Examples of Skills Center programs students can
use:
Develop academic success strategies:
1. Higher Scores
on SAT, ACT, PSAT – Develops
knowledge, skills, and test-wiseness applicable
in many different testing situations. Provides
specific training for taking these three tests.
2. Learning
Styles Inventory – Assesses individual
student’s or whole class’s preferred
learning styles. Recommends optimum teaching/learning
strategies based on the results. Shows results in
graph format.
3. Study Behavior
Inventory – Program asks
students questions about their study time habits
and attitudes. Report based on the student’s
responses illustrates areas student can improve in.
Learn techniques to make your student
life easier:
4. Inspiration – Visual diagramming program
allows users to organize ideas in concept maps and
outline form. Also good for analyzing relationship
between ideas in reading and improving comprehension
and critical reading ability.
5. Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing – Users
learn or enhance their keyboarding skills. Includes
sections on ergonomics and exercises to develop
good keyboarding habits, prevent repetitive stress
injuries.
6. Alcohol 101 – Explains
the effect of alcohol use on decision-making abilities.
A virtual campus provides the setting for scenarios
addressing the problems college students are likely
to face.

Multimedia Encyclopedia – A
general reference work for all students. Graphics-intensive.
8. Practical
English Diagnostic – Evaluates
knowledge of English fundamentals. Identifies weaknesses
users may have. Printout of results useful for prescribing
next steps. Skills Center chart matches our materials
to student needs.
9. Skillsbank5 – Comprehensive
program reviews important skills in a variety of
subjects including Reading; Language Development;
Math and Algebra; Writing; Science, and Informational
Skills such as using reference books. Graphics-intensive
format. Pretests help determine if student needs
more study in that subject.
10. Survivors – Testimonials
from the survivors and the history behind the holocaust
in Germany. Multimedia format. Steven Spielberg
produced it. |
